In Room 264 we are currently working on learning how to take two items and compare and contrast them. We began by using a venn diagram or "Top Hat" graphic organizer to capture the similarities and differences of the following:
dogs and cats
texting and handwriting
As part of a bigger picture, students will be expected to write a composition which includes an introduction, two similarities, two differences and a closing sentence or conclusion.
We began our work by comparing and contrasting several aspects about Parkdale and The Little Red Schoolhouse. These included:
Teachers
Classroom Space
Discipline
Lunch and Recess
Next we learned about transition words that will assist us in taking the information from our graphic organizers and crafting the thoughts into concise statements using proper wording. We used cookie sheets with magnetic phrases to move around and play with the transition words until our statements sounded correct.
The last part of the process was to work in groups to create a circle map that held details about our topic. Students used the details to create a topic sentence that could be used at the beginning of their finished composition.
Finished published pieces will be posted soon!
