English-Language Arts
The English Language Arts curriculum consists of listening and speaking, writing, reading and literature, and language instruction.
At the fourth grade level specific skill development includes listening and speaking for social interaction, information and understanding, critical analysis and evaluation
as well as personal response.
The goal of our writing program is to create writer's who are comfortable with written expression and experienced with a variety of forms of writing. Our program emphasizes the writing process and the six traits of writing. Through a carefully structured development of writing skills, students move from experiencing ideas to writing finished compositions.
Reading is the backbone of all classroom instruction. In fourth grade students are beginning to make the transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" in a variety of subject areas. Our reading program utilizes a variety of materials to teach students strategies which will enable them to comprehend printed material effectively and develop their literal comprehension skills to more interpretive, critical and creative levels.
