WORD COLLECTORS: Building Academic Vocabulary
As we are exposed to rigorous and more complex text and move through our curriculum -students will be continually exposed to various academic and higher level vocabulary. During ELA in room 264, students will be building a vocabulary "ring" of academic science words which includes a definition on the reverse side of the card. They will be given a hard copy of a "master list" of definitions. Any cards that are not completed in class should be completed by students at home. This visual, hands-on strategy allows students the opportunity to become "word collectors" to visually hold words we have encountered in science This strategy addresses shift #6 in literacy within the Common Core Learning Standards which can be seen in the graphic below.
