"Student of the Week" Celebration! last updated: 8.23.18
When your child is the "Student of the Week", the week will be filled with exciting events or activities to honor him or her. The week that your child has been assigned was chosen to coincide as close to their birthday month as possible. If your child has a summer birthday- another "birth date" has been chosen for their "student of the week" celebration! For your convenience, you will find the 2018-2019 "Student of the Week" Schedule posted here
Birthday Celebrations
*Students may choose to bring in a birthday treat of their choice to share with the class (24 students) on a day that is convenient for you. I would prefer that it coincide with their designated time as "Student of the Week". (There are several months that are "heavy birthday" months! ) The treats will be shared near the end of the day and within our own classroom. Since there will only be 24 days out of the school year that we will have a birthday treat (as opposed to a daily healthy snack) and because we do not have any student allergies in our homeroom at this time, the students are invited to share a treat of their choice! Please be sure to send in necessary utensils/paper products. Students will wipe down their desks after the treats are finished.
Information about our 4th grade policy regarding DAILY HEALTHY SNACKS can be found here
The Mysterious Portmanteau : During the week before a student is "Student of the Week", a special "portmanteau" (traveling bag) will be sent home with the child. Students have a week to collect 3 special items with which to fill the bag at home and bring it back to share with classmates. Students should also bring 12 photos of their choice to display on the Student of the Week bulletin board.
Favorite Book: The "Student of the Week" brings one of his or her favorite books to show the class. Students should explain why the book is their favorite, what genre it falls under and one reason why they recommend their classmates read it!
Parent Letter: Parents will write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you. Send the letter in a sealed envelope to school with your child, and I will read the letter aloud to the entire class. The content of the letter is up to you, but you may want to choose from the following ideas: Describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, write a silly or serious poem about your child, tell us some neat things we may not know about your child, send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the pictures, or write a short story with your child as the main character.
In the Spotlight! The "Student of the Week" will present, share and describe up to 12 of their own photos with their classmates as we display them one at a time on the smartboard using the document camera. After the presentation, classmates will use the voice of "Investigative Reporters" to interview the "Student of the Week"! Classmates will use their investigative notes to create and draft a friendly letter to the student of the week. The letter will be written and edited for homework. Students will be invited to use their word nerd skills and what they have learned about the craft of writing during our in-class mini lessons in their letters! Letters will be compiled into a special keepsake book that will be sent home with each Student of the Week !
